Understanding when executive coaching may be used and key questions to consider.

The process of gathering info to help build an individual’s self-awareness or a client’s ability to better understand their strengths and challenges.

The Progressing in Leadership Inventory© or PLI is designed for leaders who are preparing for or beginning a new senior or executive role. This assessment helps to clarify the expectations of new common areas of organizational leadership.

Based on the question, “What will the next role require in terms of….?”, the PLI addresses the key areas of:

  • Communication skills
  • Professional relationships
  • Responsibility and authority
  • Supervision and lead roles
  • Collaboration and working with others
  • Liability and risk management
  • Public and leadership presence
  • Institutional knowledge and perspective

The PLI is a valuable tool for individual executive coaching.

The IHE IQ© is a tool to assess an individual’s broad knowledge of their institution. The more knowledgeable they are, the more effective they will be — in any role.

Example questions from the IHE IQ:

  • I understand which institutional structures are decision-making bodies and which are advisory, and can articulate the differences between them.
  • I can identify three to five ways that different units collaborate with each other on projects or programs.
  • I understand how academic decisions are made – curricular and personnel.
  • I understand what risk management entails on my campus. I can name three to five areas of risk on my campus.
  • I know, in a general way, what vocations and activities alumni pursue after graduation and the degree to which they are engaged with the institution over time.

An effective part of an overall institutional or next generation leadership development program, the IHE IQ is a great tool for those new to leadership and who aspire to take on additional responsibility.
